About the College

Founding History

The College of Life Sciences was established in response to the reorganization of the National Yang Ming Medical College into a university and was renamed National Yang Ming University in 1994 (merging with National Chiao Tung University to form National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University on February 2021 , in order to actively embrace the new era of life sciences.

When the College of Life Sciences was first established, it was organized into nine outstanding basic medical-related institutes, including the Institute of Neuroscience, the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, the Institute of Biochemistry (formerly the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), the Institute of Physiology, the Institute of Pharmacology, the Institute of Anatomy, the Institute of Genetics (formerly the Institute of Genomic Sciences), the Institute of Parasitology, and the Institute of Biopharmacology.

The Department of Life Sciences (the only university department within the College of Life Sciences) was established in 1996; the Institute of Physiology, the Institute of Pharmacology, the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and the Institute of Parasitology were incorporated into the College of Medicine by resolution of the Board of Regents in January 2002; the Institute of Biological Information was established in August 2003. The Institute of Biomedical Information was renamed as the Institute of Biomedical Information in 2007 and was jointly operated by the College of Life Sciences and the College of Medicine; the Institute of Biopharmacology was incorporated into the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in August 2015. Currently, there are five departments in the College of Life Sciences,
including the Department of Life Sciences and the Institute of Genomic Sciences, the Institute of Neuroscience, the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Institute of Biomedical Information.

In addition, in response to the rapid development of new knowledge in the life sciences, the School has established the Biotechnology Management Program (jointly established with National Chengchi University in 2002, the first inter-university and interdisciplinary degree program in Taiwan). D. program in molecular medicine (established jointly with the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica in 2003, and led by the College of Life Sciences in 2010), an interdisciplinary international graduate degree program in neuroscience (established in 2013) and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in neuroscience (established in 2014), a master’s program in biotechnology and healthcare management (established in 2015), and a bi Technology and Healthcare Industry PhD program (established in 2017),
the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Credit Program (established in 2022) and the Interdisciplinary Master’s Degree Program in Molecular Medicine (established in Republic of China 2022), there are six degree programs and two credit programs, which provide students with multiple pathways of study and training.

College Philosophy

The College of Life Sciences aims to create a high-quality academic atmosphere, cultivate first-class intellectuals and research talents, provide diversified learning opportunities, and cultivate a complete knowledge of life sciences through innovative and inspiring teaching methods, as well as independent thinking and solutions. Talents with problem abilities. The cultivation of students’ core competence and literacy focuses on: 1) the ability to think independently; 2) the ability to teamwork and solve problems; 3) the ability to learn and integrate across fields; 4) the ability to engage in cutting-edge life science research; 5) scientific ethics Of literacy.

Educate

The basic core courses of the university department cover basic knowledge from molecules to systems, including a series of courses such as general life sciences, biochemistry, molecular cell biology, development and physiology, evolution and ecology, and laboratory research. In addition, a series of books and newspaper discussion courses are offered to cultivate students’ independent thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

In terms of research institutes, the first emphasis is on the learning and discussion of specialized field knowledge, providing the latest knowledge and development in related fields, and laying the foundation for engaging in cutting-edge life science research. And in line with the national science and technology development policy, strengthen the teaching and research in the fields of molecular medicine, new drug development and biotechnology, and establish communication channels with the industry, promote industrial cooperation research, and assist the industry in improving research capabilities.

Research

The research topics of the College of Life Sciences start from the point and conduct horizontal or in-depth research; establish research systems at different levels from gene bodies, molecules, cells, and even living bodies. The research objects include genes, protein molecules, bacteria, viruses, cells, Yeast, fruit flies, mice, to humans.

Research results are particularly important in the fields of genomics, brain science, molecular cell biology, hepatitis and liver cancer. In recent years, papers have been published in top international journals, such as Nature Communications, Nature Neuroscience, and Nature Cell Biology, Nature, etc. Many teachers in the hospital have been awarded the Outstanding Research Award of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Special Research Award of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Lecture of the Ministry of Education, and the Yan Qingling Outstanding Research Award of Basic Medicine.
